Find a Team
Matthew 4: 18 - Jesus was walking. Why is this significant? Well, he wasn’t in front of the synagogue trying to recruit the religious leaders of the day to be part of His small group. He wasn’t in front of the church telling everyone that if we don’t have enough volunteers in children’s ministry that we will need to start having a family integrated church. He was walking, being led by the spirit, drawn to some men working to catch fish. I can appreciate the analogies of catching men instead of fish, but seriously He was looking for men who knew how to work, and how to learn.
Jesus took who he could find. Again, the principle that John Maxwell introduces in his book Developing the Leader Within is true, while leaders may be born, they still have to be taught. Anyone can be a leader…
Point .. the WHO isn’t as important as the WHO is leading the WHO
Practical 1: Look at who you already have (don’t look past – look at)
When I took over the worship department we had 3 musicians… just three. A drummer, a bass player, and an electric guitarist. With music being such an important part, I knew I had to build a team. Without a team, the worship experience would have been… well it wouldn’t been a worship experience.
Today we have over 50 active members on our worship team. We looked at who we had and we grew the team. We determined what the team was going to look like, what direction we would go with the music, what we would require from our leaders, what the connection points would be… we developed the ministry and the leaders.
Grass is always greener where its watered and mowed…and to that I add – water your own lawn! Stop stealing other leader’s leaders. YOU develop a team, YOU put value and worth into them. YOU build relationships and then give them responsibilities.
Practical 2: Hook Em
That’s right. Hook em. Make sure that you do not have some broke down, visionless, un-excellent ministry. You have to know the vision and make that appetizing to those around. Recruit, look around, win them over – after all the ministry you are in charge of is powerful, purposeful, and people reaching!
Write down those in your church that are not connected in an area of leadership, and then pray over them. Allow God to instruct you on who to encourage where to serve, and who to just encourage.

Thank you , Ben. I love the words here, “Grass is always greener where its watered and mowed…and to that I add – water your own lawn!” May I borrow them? =) I have been in a rut and need to build up the ministry I am over. I am so glad I found your site. I appreciate this blog.
Most certainly – I once had a conversation with God about someone using an idea I had… His response to me was “I could give them all the ideas if you want, Ben”. So, i realize that anything I write, is simply something that has been revealed to me. Use it all!!!
Thank you for the kinds words!
